From The Scoutmaster Minute:
A science professor at a local university gave a test at the end of each chapter; and included a short thought at the bottom of the test page. On one particular test, the message read: "You are taking two tests today: one in physics and the other in honesty. There are many good men and women in the world that cannot pass a test in physics. So if you must fail one of these tests, it is better to fail the physics test."
The ramblings of an ex BSA Varsity Team Coach on Scouting and specifically the Varsity program. My thoughts, ideas and concerns are in no way connected or shared in any form or fashion by the Boy Scouts of America or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) who volutold me to serve as a Varsity Coach. Some personal rambling too........... (I am an Assistant Scoutmaster now that the Varsity Program has been murdered........)

Tory's Fortune Cookie
From Tory's fortune cookie......
"Leaders are like eagles. They don't flock, you find them one at a time."
and
"Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things."

Happiness
If you want happiness for an
hour - take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day - go fishing.
If you want happiness for a month - get married.
If you want happiness for a year - inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime - help someone else.
Not so sure about the marriage one.

Not so sure about the marriage one.

At the Crossroads - Sadie Tiller Crawley
He stood at the crossroads all alone,
The sunlight in his face;
He had no thought for an evil course,
He was set for a manly race.
But the road stretched east and the road stretched west,
And he did not know which road was the best;
So he took the wrong road and it lead him down,
And he lost the race and the victor's crown.
He was caught at last in an angry snare
Because no one stood at the crossroads there
To show him the better road.
Another day at the self-same place
A boy with high hopes stood;
He, too, was set for a manly race
He was seeking the things that were good.
And one was there who the roads did know,
And that one showed him the way to go;
So he turned away from the road leading down,
And he won the race and the victor's crown;
He walks today on the highways fair
Because one stood at the crossroads there
To show him a better road.

Varisty Coach Minutes - Scoutmaster Minute
Here is a link to ScoutmasterCG's Scoutmaster Minutes.
Coach's Minutes (or Scoutmaster Minutes) are important for the boys. It is a way to make them think, cause them to slow down and most importantly causes them to reflect on the things they have learned. It is a way to put a tight bow on a meeting or campout.

Happiness and doors
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” - Helen Keller (1880–1968)

Old Crow, Young Crow
ABOUT CROWS - by John Ciardi The old crow is getting slow; the young crow is not. Of what the young crow does not know, the old crow knows a lot. At knowing things, the old crow is still the young crow’s master. What does the old crow not know? How to go faster. The young crow flies above, below, and rings around the slow old crow. What does the fast young crow not know? WHERE TO GO.

Pride
There are lots of way to share this quote during a Scoutmaster Minute of Varsity Coach Minute. This was shared in Sunday School this last Sunday. We were talking about callings and how we either make ourselves feel like shmoes and can't do our calling well OR we feel like we are so awesome that this calling is going to be a breeze. For an example of my pride refer to my EDGE Training Class. Thought it was going to be easy and I sucked it up. Humbling. On to the quote:
Pride is the trumpet of ignorance.

Special Olympic Athlete Oath
Let me win but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
I have tried on multiple occassions to get my boys interested in helping Special Olympics athlete especially since our themes are centered around sports. I have not been able to get them to do it yet but I won't give up. I will never give up.

The Two Wolves
One
evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a debate that goes on
inside people. He said, "My son, the battle between two wolves is inside
us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,
arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false
pride, superiority, and ego."
"The other is good. It is joy,
peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy,
generosity, truth, compassion, and faith."
The grandson thought about this for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
